Would is a modal verb. Would is often used in conditional
sentences with a clause beginning
with "If..." but it can also be used in the following situations:
(WOULD es un verbo modal. Would se usa a menudo en oraciones
condicionales con una cláusula que comienza con "If..."
pero también se puede usar en las siguientes situaciones:
USE
1-We use would mainly to: would es un verbo auxiliar -
un verbo auxiliar modal.
Lo
usaríamos principalmente para:
a- talk about the past ___________ • hablar sobre el pasado
b- talk about the future in the past
______ hablar sobre el futuro en el pasado
c- express the
conditional mood____• expresar el estado de ánimo

2- We also
use would for other functions, such as:
expressing desire, polite requests and questions,
opinion or hope, wish and past habits . (También usamos would para
otras funciones, como:expresar deseo, solicitudes y preguntas
corteses, opinión o esperanza, anhelo y arrepentimiento)
3- Used as a polite invitation or to offer
- Would you
like to go to the movies with me tonight?
- Would you
like some more tea?
- I would be happy to
help you with preparation for your exam.
- Would you like to have a coffee with me? Yes, I would. (
invitation)
4- Describe a prediction (hypothetical situations)
- It would be nice to
have a barbecue.
- Nobody would believe me
if I told them I had seen a UFO.
5- To describe past habits
- Before internet people would send
letters to each other.
- When I was at school I would get up before
- everyone else in our house
6- Future in the past
We use would when we are talking about the past but we want
to talk about something which was in the future at
that time (in the past). (Usamos would cuando hablamos del pasado
pero queremos hablar de algo que estaba en el futuro en ese
momento (en el pasado))
When I was in Paris last year I thought I would spend
hours sitting at coffee shops writing ideas for my novel.
She promised she would send a postcard from Peru.
I told you he would help us.
Structure
of would
The basic
structure for would is:

Note that: Tenga en cuenta que:
The auxiliary verb would is invariable. There is only one form: would

The main verb is usually in the base form (He would go)
(• El verbo principal suele estar en la forma base (Iría))
Would: form
AFFIRMATIVE FORM
Would comes first in the verb phrase (after the subject and
before another verb):
Dad would
sing to us every evening.
NEGATIVE FORM
The negative form of would is wouldn’t. We don’t use don’t, doesn’t,
didn’t with would: There wouldn’t be any food in the house.
QUESTION FORM
The subject and would change position to form questions.
We don’t use do, does, did:
Would that be a good idea?
We can use would and wouldn’t in
question tags:
She wouldn’t
be any help, would she?
They would
enjoy that, wouldn’t they?
