ADVERBS OF MANNER

Adverbs of manner are invariable words that modify verbs, adjectives,

and other adverbs. They indicate how an action occurs or develops

Los ADVERBS OF MANNER son palabras invariables que modifican a

verbos, adjetivos y a otros adverbios. Indican de qué manera ocurre o se

 desarrolla una acción.

We can use adverbs in many ways, from describing how often we do

something to where we do it.
What about adverbs of manner?
What are they for and how do we use them?
(Podemos usar adverbios de muchas maneras, desde describir
con qué frecuencia hacemos algo hasta dónde lo hacemos.
¿Y los adverbios de modo?
¿Para qué sirven y cómo los usamos?
Adverbs of manner tell us how something happens.
(Los adverbios de modo nos dicen cómo sucede algo. )

EXAMPLE

 1- They dress elegantly.

2- Some elderly people drive slowly. (• Algunas personas mayores conducen
despacio)

·3- She works very hard

HOW TO CREATE AN ADVERB OF MANNER

To make adverbs of manner, we usually add -ly to the adjective. For example,

·         quick – quickly

·         careful – carefully

·         gentle – gently

When an adjective ends in -y we change the -y to -i then add -ly. Cuando
un adjetivo
termina en -y cambiamos la -y a -i y luego agregamos ly.

 For example,

·         happy – happily

·         greedy – greedily

·         easy – easily

However, there are also some irregular adverbs:

·         good – well

·         hard – hard

·         fast – fast

·         late – late

·         straight – straight

·         high – high

Where does an adverb of manner go in a sentence?

In most cases, adverbs of manner come after a verb.( En la mayoría de los
casos,
los adverbios de modo van después de un verbo)

EXAMPLE

·         We dress casually on Fridays.

·         Athletes run very fast.

·         The students are listening attentively.

Sometimes however, the adverb is put before the verb to add
emphasis to the meaning. (A veces, sin embargo,
el adverbio se pone antes del verbo para agregar
énfasis al significado)

 EAMPLE

·         She hurriedly opened the present.

·         They sadly left before we arrived.

·         I quickly ran to the shops.

If there are two verbs in the sentence, the position of
the adverb can change the
meaning. (Si hay dos verbos en la oración, la posición
del adverbio puede cambiar
el significado.)

 EXAMPLE

·         They accepted the offer immediately and moved out.

·         They accepted the offer and moved out immediately.

Rule 1: The suffix –ly.

Adding the suffix –ly is one of the most common ways to form adverbs including
Adverbs of manner. Agregar el sufijo –ly es una de las formas más comunes
de formar adverbios, incluidos los adverbios de modo

Most often we form adverbs in this way from monosyllabic words.

Sweet—sweetly

Clear- clearly

Brave- bravely

Rule 2:

 By adding the suffix -lly

We add the -lly suffix most often to words that have two or more syllables.

  • comically
  • amorally

Rule 3:

By adding the suffix –ily.

We add the suffix –ily when forming an adverb from an  adjective when the

adjective ends with the vowel -y.

  • heavy – heavily
  • lucky – luckily

Rule 4: late and lately.

Many students often confuse late and lately, thinking that  lately is

late + -ly made from late.

But in fact, late and lately are two completely different adverbs.

She knew it was too late to do anything.

What have you been doing lately?

Rule 5: Hard and hardly.

Many students also often confuse hard and hardly,

thinking  that hardly is hard + ly made from hard. And this is also not true.

Hard and hardly are two completely different adverbs. Hard and hardly have

 different meanings.

A good man is hard to find.

False tongue will hardly speak truth

Rule 6:

An adjective becomes an adverb without changing its form.

Among the adverbs, there are such adverbs that are formed from adjectives,
but at the same time, these adjectives do not change in any way.
(Entre los adverbios, hay adverbios que se forman a partir de adjetivos,
pero al mismo tiempo, estos adjetivos no cambian de ninguna manera.)

Look at the following list, remember that these

words all look the same  as adjectives and adverbs:

,fast, Early,  Deep, Long, Near, Late, Far, High, Wide,Hard, Low, straight
